Ideas For Baby's First Foods
Here at Yummy Tummy, we understand that this stage can be very daunting for some. Now there is no need to worry as we bring you ideas for baby’s first foods. We bring you approved methods and food ideas.
You may wish to start with single flavours first to get your baby used to the taste of a particular food. At the start of weaning it is more about getting your baby used to eating and exploring food, rather than getting them to eat a high quantity of food. They will still be getting most of their energy and nutrients from breastmilk or formula milk.
If you are using purees, you may wish to add in a little bit of your baby’s usual milk (breastmilk or formula) so it tastes slightly familiar and to help loosen any purees.
For finger foods, those that can be cut into pieces that are big enough for your baby to hold in their fist and stick out of the top of it are best. Pieces about the size of your own finger work well.
For example, broccoli, cauliflower, green beans, asparagus, cabbage and Brussel sprouts. These are great first foods – research shows offering these foods at the beginning of weaning can increase the likelihood that your baby will develop a liking for these healthy foods now and in the future. See the previous post about veg-first weaning! Cook until nice and tender and blend into a puree or offer as finger food.
After 6 months babies can be introduced to full-fat dairy foods (e.g. cheese, yoghurt), foods containing wheat (e.g. bread, pasta, noodles, wheat-based cereals) and varied sources of protein (e.g. egg, meats, poultry, fish, beans, lentils).
